Ill Wind Blowing... « Thread Started on Sept 30, 2009, 3:28am »
All this talk of war had him concerned, the land had been relatively calm since the last major war that saw him drafted into his highness' service. Caim sat in his quarters in the barracks in the sectioned off department for the queens guard, longsword in hand, whetstone in the other.
"something is brewing....i can feel it in the air..." he spoke slowly as he scraped the stone down the edge of enlightenment, his ornate golden longsword, sharpening it. there was a lot of unrest all around the palace, but no-one had made clear as for the reason, there were many rumours but he did not want to believe anything unless it came from the queen's mouth herself...as well as his life, he owed her that much too... as he stood u, the light from the window caught his azure blue plate armour, he took the greatsword from the corner of the room and slung it onto his back, sheathing the longsword at his side he proceeded out of the door towards the courtyard. "maybe a little walk will help me clear my head..."

Johan frowned, and looked around. It seemed it had been hours since he had been allowed into the palace, hopeing to be able to talk with the Queens generals. The common folk of the land where all talking of a great war that was about to break out and consume this land, but having been travelling in strange and foreign lands for sometime Johan struggled to understand the details of the impending conflict. he glanced at his reflection in the small pool of water in the court yard he now stood, and smilied a bit ruefully. It was his own fault he reasoned. The chamberlain had asked him to wait for the generals to summon him, but wanderlust flowed true through the young vagabond knights veins and inevitably he had gone wandering and got himself lost. What an impression im making, he thought, come here looking for work as a sellsword and end up lost in the palace! He sighed and sat down on a small rock on the edge of the silent pool. Someone will be around soon, im sure, he mused, then we can get this whole mess sorted out..
Caim walked out into the light of the courtyard where a man dressed in an officers garb approached him, "ah..fourth adjutant corporal!" he saluted. Caim nodded slowly while saluting his superior. "sir?" his face brightened for a moment, maybe he was finally going to learn what was causing this ruckus! The officer then let the forsaken words burst forth from his mouth "remain on standby Caim...we must be ready to mobilise when her highness gives the word..." Caim grunted "yessir..." he folded his arms, "I sense some annoyance there adjutant..." the officer narrowed his eyes, "sorry sir...i just want to know why all of this is happening so quickly...but there must be some reason to keep the cause under wraps for now..." he saluted again as the officer bade him farewell and proceeded inside...
Looking back around the courtyard he could see the familiar sights of squires, messengers and wardens rushing around the place, new recruits heading t the training arena and...that was a new face...sat over by the lake in the center of the court, Caim decided to investigate, he approached the man slowly "...hail..." he watched through his brown fringed hair...

The courtyard soon began alive with messengers and squires hurrying this way and that. Johan did his best to try to catch their eye, but they all seemed to be on much too important errands to notice him. At last he noticed two military men of seeming high rank. Suddenly becoming all too aware of the fact the his armour was more than a little travel stained and worn. They entered the court yard, one however quickly left, leaving the other, who approached Johan. 'Hail, Lord,' Johan said in responce to the man's greeting, 'I am Johan Van De Marr, last of my line of household knights from the far north, i came here to enlist, sir' Johan thought it best to gloss over the fact he was in no way where he should be, and would probably get in trouble if that fact was made obvious.
Caim smiled a little "you are huh?" the last words registered in his head "...did you say Van de marr?..." he had heard stories of that particular house, they were spoken highly of in his native kurga, some of their basic greatsword techniques were adapted from their basic forms..."no kidding!" he grinned "i'm sure you'll make a great soldier..." he scratched his chin "i doubt you'll have a problem enlisting..."he offered a hand "Caim, Caim Haphaestus Varin..."

Johan stook the man's hand and grinned at him, at least someone in this place was willing to talk to him. 'I recognise your name, Caim Varin, are you not part of the queens personal guard?' The man stood before Johan was one of the best warriors in the land he recalled, perhaps he could gain some instruction from him before all this was over. Then he remembered Caim's recognition of his own family name. 'Sadly, like i said; im the last of my line, and it seems i have much to live up and prove. Do you think you could show me where to enlist? And also forgive me, but where i could get some food, i've been here hours now and the journey from the north has not been easy, it appears the whole world is gearing up for this war.'

Caim nodded with a slight smile "you're correct...but its more of a personal unit more than a bodyguard...i'm not fit to guard her shoes let alone herself" he laughed as he folded his arms again. "i can take you to enlist in a little while, but for now it'd be better to get something to eat..." he inched his head to the side "after all, a warriors no good on an empty stomach right?" this was starting to take his mind off of the commotion around the palace...

'I hear that,' Johan smilied. It felt strange. He'd been on the road so long that the feeling was alien to him. The elements had battered his features and thiefs and highwaymen had dogged him, ever since he had left the north. There had been little to smile about in these last months, and with war looking more and more certain with each passing day. He felt like the world was a much darker place, then when he last been in this part of the world. He still had no idea why the the robbers had chased him so far south. And that disturbed him a little, in the back of his mind, but he pushed that thought away. 'So,' Johan said, 'i trust you know the way to the kitchen...lead on, my lord.'

Caim extended a warm smile as he led on through the large doors opposite where he entered from. he had seen a lot of people enlisting lately, all from possible conscriptions and drafts the high up beureucrats were no doubt putting into effect. there were many different people coming in, and not many of them could hold their posture let alone their cheap standard issue weaponry, seeing that warriors of such caliber of house Van de Mar answering this call was a breath of fresh air. "Johan...was it?" he turned to him as they walked "what was it like up north?" his thought drifted to his native Kurga...the blizzard still beating his face nostalgically in his mind as if he had only left yesterday...

Johan looked at him 'cold,' he said, 'also during the winter there was no sun...for days..' Then he looked around him at the warm garden, 'i suppose it was worth the cold and evil storms in end...' The garden was in such contrast to the places he'd been forced to travel to in the last months. It had been a means to an end, a step closer to what he so deserperatly sought. 'Perhaps i'll have to tell you more about the frozen north sometime,' johan nodded to his friend, 'but they are not the happiest of stories..'

Caim closed his eyes, understanding the vibe Johan was emanating, "i understand friend...everyone has tribulations..." he thought back to the battle that brought him into the welcoming arms of Ilmari...the queens words as he was brought back from the brink of death, "Dark days drive us all to brighter paths in the end..." he smiled "a man taught me that long ago...i forget what regiment he was with though..." he scratched the back of his head in reminisced thought...

Johan chuckled at that. 'Dark days, indeed, still with soldiers like us on the front line, perhaps this war could be very interesting, don't you think?' Grinning, johan adopted a stern tone, 'You there!' he demanded of one of the haughty serving men passing by, 'be so good as to bring his lordship and i a tankard of ale each and a worthy meal at once!' The serving man frowned, 'And just exactly do you think you are?' he said with a distainful sniff, 'why you look like you've jus-' 'Do you not recognise your war generals, man?' Johan interupted, in a dangerous voice. The man's eyes seemed to examine the massive sheath on Johan's back, and Caim's deadly looking weapon and thought better than to argue. He scurried off muttering curses, but still eyeing the two men fearfully. As soon as he was out of earshot, Johan chuckled, and looked innocently at his friend, 'Well we could be generals, for all he knows....'

Caim stifled a laugh until the fearful soldier was long gone. "you really are something you know that Johan?" in some respects he reminded him of himself all those years ago, vyng to find acceptance in the queens guard due to his non Ilmarian bloodline. "I can see you rising through ranks quite quickly here..." "um sirs?" the soldier came back holding two tankards of ale, "the...the meals are on the way...i'm sorry for my remarks..." Caim bowed his head slowly as the soldier nodded in agreement, gave them their drinks and ran off... Caim took a long swig of his ale "...nothing like a drink to clear the mind eh?"
