 To Wander the Desert
« Thread Started on Jun 10, 2009, 8:03pm »

In the midday heat, amongst the dunes, walked a red dragontaur. He could hear the sand swish and squeak as he walked along and see the heat shimmering from the dunes, as well as watch the occasional dust devil skittter along them. With the exception of the crackling sound the energy within his neck spines made, it was silent. Thyrdowhan walked until he came to a clump of cacti, where he snatched a large and very spiny pad from one of them. His hide was impervious to cactus spines, so he felt no pain as he held the pad in his pawlike hand.

He began to eat the cactus, for it was one way he got his moisture in this hot, sandy wasteland. He scanned the area about him to check for any danger. He noticed a group of travelers in the far distance making their way to a destination unknown. Though they were about a quarter mile away, he could hear their voices as well as the sounds of their beasts of burden. He decided to follow, but would maintain his distance, for that group may be a caravan.....and he knew that this desert was infested with robbers.

It was bad enough that Kadai and Karisu shared thoughts, but to also see Ksrisu acting the way he was around that female was driving Kadai over the deep end. Deciding that he was tired of circling around passively and watched as absolutely nothing happened, he turns around and just flies simply for the sake of flight. He hadn't thought of where he would go, becausecif he did, Karisu would also know. Kadai would figure out his destination when he got there, wherever there was.

Kadai had been looking around as he passed over several different landscapes, finding little of interest to him. That was until he flew into the Xipil Desert. Not long after the sandy dunes began passing beneath him did Kadai recognize a faintly familiar, but clearly unique scent. When he further thought about it, there was only one creature in existence with that scent. Was it possible that they also found the dimensional rift that Chaos had used to get to this realm? There was only one way to find out.

As he tailed the caravan, Thyrdowhan watched the people as they moved along. He suddenly heard a shout and realized he had been spotted by a scout. The lone rider left the caravan and spurred his mount towards the dragontaur, readying an arrow to shoot at the monster. Thyrdowhan waited until the rider got close enough to shoot, then he fired a tiny bolt from his horns at the man's bow and arrow. The effect was immediate, the bolt shattered the bow, whereupon the man's horse shied-tossing his rider and running away. The scout drew a sword and rushed at Thyrdowhan, who just turned and knocked him off his feet with a tail slap when the man got close.

"I have no quarrel with thee, so go back to thy caravan. If they have hired thee to protect them, thou hast left them vulnerable to an attack from brigands. If thou be their guide through these lands, thou art going to get them lost, for they continue on their way whilst thou makest thine attack," said Thyrdowhan as the man rose to his feet. The scout glared at the dragontaur and rushed at Thyrdowhan again, and again he knocked the man off his feet with a tail slap. It was obvious that the scout's hatred of dragons was hotter than the desert heat, for the scout got to his feet and attacked again, but his sword couldn't pierce the dragontaur's hide. For several minutes this scout hacked at Thyrdowhan until he collapsed from heatstroke. Thyrdowhan stood over the man's prone body as he struggled to get to his feet, for he was providing shade from the oppressive sun for his enemy. The man clutched and flung sand as he tried to get up, but he was too weak. Finally two other scouts came riding up to rescue their comrade.

They approached Thyrdowhan with great caution, but the dragontaur showed no inclination to attack. They bent down and picked up the fallen scout, and gave him some water to drink in the shade of the dragontaur. The one scout gave Thyrdowhan a quick glance as he and his companion carried the heatstroke victim between them. When they got their comrade on one of the horses, they mounted, and rode away.

"That's it lads. Tell that youngster, he's very fortunate to have attacked Red Carnage...and lived to tell the tale," said Thyrdowhan, "Then tell him not to go attacking dragons on a whim."

Kadai circled high overhead passively watching the approach of the lone rider to face Thyrdowhan. Very unwise, but if this creature was who he thought it was, then the human would miraculously survive, for he knew well of the semi-pacifist nature of a certain dragontaur. On Kadai looked, and just as he suspected, the creature defended itself in such a way as to not actually harm their assailant. They were good, because had that been Kadai down there, the man would most likely have lost his arm during the first exchange.

It was true that Kadai, or Chaos as he was truly known, had pacified himself quite a bit in comparison to how he used to be, but he was still far from sparing the death and/or dismemberment of anyone brash enough to attack him unprovoked. As the scuffle ended with the man apparently passed out from heat exhaustion, Kadai began to circle slightly lower, but stayed high enough to still be mistaken for a vulture in the desert heat.

He watched the riders as they went back to their caravan. When they were just specks in the distance, Thyrdowhan turned around and began to run across the sand in another direction. He ran up a great dune and when he reached the top, turned around to survey the vast domain that was this heat wracked place. The sky was the color of burnished brass and the sun a blinding yellowish-white ball. Thyrdowhan noticed that something was flying high above him, and he looked intently at the soaring creature. From so great a distance, it could be a vulture, but as Thyrdowhan watched the creature turn he recognized a draconic form.

"So this world has its own dragons," he thought as he watched the dragon soar in the distance. This world, this world that he walked into when he was wandering the deeper caves in the Valley of Shadows, as if within the depths of those caves were doorways into other realms. Then again, he did see another dimension when he'd been in Thulbhar the Spider's cave, the dimension where the Droombahru had been imprisoned after being turned into mindless abominations. As Thyrdowhan mused over his thoughts, he smelled men and their horses behind him. He turned around to see that at the bottom of the dune a group of soldiers galloping at great speed along the dune. Such was their haste, they didn't notice the dragontaur sitting atop the dune. Thyrdowhan could hear them urging their horses, so he decided to give those horses added incentive, and he uttered a loud growl. One rider glanced up and saw the huge, red dragontaur standing atop the dune, it's jaws open in a fearsome snarl, and the most poisonous sounding growl coming from it. The effect on the horses was immediate, they screamed in terror, and bolted away from the sand dune and its fearsome occupant.

"Obviously a scouting party, for their horses were bred for speed, not strength," thought Thyrdowhan as he watched the squadron sprint away. He watched the circling dragon in the skies above him, and noticed that this dragon was familiar looking. Then for some unknown reason...or whim, Thyrdowhan started to sing a dragonsong. It was one he remembered hearing his father sing about the fire and heat that red dragons love so much.

As Kadai lazily watched yet another group of humans get scared away, his level of interest increased, and again even more so when the creature looked in his direction, obviously having noticed him now. And as if on cue, yet another familiarity occured. Kadai picked up the familiar tone of a dragonsong, one that he heard before in the Valley of Shadows. Now he really had to find out if this creature was who he thought it was.

Widening his circular flight, Kadai once again begins his descent, this time going almost into a complete nosedive facing the opposite direction as the dragontaur. Upon getting within a hundred feet of the sandy dunes below, Kadai extends his large wings and levels himself out to turn around and glide the remaining distance between him and the dragontaur. It only took him a few moments to close the distance, and if memory served him right, they wouldn't attack unless provoked. Finally landing in the sand with a muffled thud, Kadai looks, and it is just who he suspected.

Thyrdowhan's song rang through the hot air, his voice a deep, rich bass. He thrummed and purred throughout the song:

"Along with a hoard of treasure my son, we red dragons crave much heat. Whether the blistering desert or a fiery volcano, we love to be there amongst the blazing sands or molten rock. We laugh at fire and call it our friend, and we can command it.
When the Great Ones made the red dragons, they used lava and fire, then infused it with the spark of life-and the first dragons were born. We were made to be a noble breed, to be the masters of fire...

He then heard the muffled thud of something landing behind him, and though he knew of the dragon's presence, Thyrdowhan awaited its coming. He sniffed the air and caught a familiar scent. His mind went back to the time where he encountered a dark dragon named Chaos, and of their killing of a strange creature that had been named Terlabisk. He had stopped singing the lyrics to his song, but continued to thrum and purr. He was in a relaxed mood, for the intense heat was as refreshing to him as a cool drink of water to a thirsty man.

As Kadai slowly crept up to the dragontaur who had to know of his presence, he tried to recall exactly what his name was. Being such a creature as Thyrdowhan, it was near impossible to sneak up on for most creatures, seeing as he had the senses of any other dragon. That didn't stop Kadai from prowling, however, but he wasn't doing such to sneak up, but rather to give himself time to properly jog his memory. He remembered fighting a spider monster with this creature. Terlabisk... Stormhound.... Thyrdowhan. That was his name!

"Thyrdowhan?"

Kadai was unsure if he was absolutely correct, but the only way to find out was to try. Kadai remembered only select portions of his life before the dimensional shift, as if a part of him was left behind. In actuality, that was true, for his seemingly infinite aggression was left behind along with some of his memories, and although he still has that 'I only care for myself at times' mentality, he is a lot more mellow than he used to be.

Thyrdowhan heard the sand swish and squeak as the the other dragon came towards him, and when he heard his name mentioned, the dragontaur turned to see Chaos coming towards him. He stopped singing, though he kept on purring. He was glad to see Chaos, for he longed to see a familiar face, and though he fully remembered their encounter-Thyrdowhan bore no grudge towards Chaos. Thyrdowhan turned and walked down the dune towards Chaos, though he wanted to ask the dark dragon how he came to this place, he knew that that question will be answered.

"It's good to see thee, Chaos. I have wandered this desolate land for awhile, and the heat invigorates me. How I came to be here is baffling, for I remember wandering the deep caves in the Valley of Shadows for a time that I cannot recall, but when I saw a light at the end of the cave...I found myself entering into this parched desert and not the Valley," said Thyrdowhan to Chaos. Though he had called the dragon by the name he remembered, Thyrdowhan wondered how Chaos would respond to hearing his old name: Maybe in this world, the dark dragon had changed his name.

As he spoke to Chaos, Thyrdowhan noticed that the dark dragon had a different attitude....as if being in this world had changed him. Though he knew that Chaos was a proud dragon, there seemed to be a less belligerent attitude about him. Maybe being away from familiar surroundings have brought about a change for the better in Chaos. The sun beat down on both dragons as they faced each other.

"Strange, how a familiar face can make one long for home," thought Thyrdowhan. Memories of Morbidia filled his mind, and though it was a dark and evil place, he had called it home. Still, he would claim this heated desolation of a desert his home. As he looked at Chaos, he thought of befriending the dark dragon, but would let the relationship build at its own pace. Thinking that the intense heat would be uncomfortable for Chaos, Thyrdowhan began to decrease the air tempertature around them, but he did it slowly. His scales darkened into a deeper red as he cooled the air around them, and then he put a shimmery field over their heads. Within the field the air temp dropped into the low 90's. Thyrdowhan's new power troubled him, and he had wanted to tell Stormhound about this power, but never had gotten around to seeing her. He realized that now he'd have to learn about this power to generate cold, and how he-a red dragon-was able to possess such a power. That he was a mutant could only explain so much, and maybe he's of an extinct bloodline. Whatever the answer, Thyrdowhan wanted to find it.

Kadai looked at Thyrdowhan curiously, now knowing that he wasn't the only one subjected to this sudden planar shift, the only difference was that the dark dragon was snatched away with his own powers, while the dragontaur stumbled upon some kind of portal. It also seemed that their different means of arrival had different effects on their subconscious memories. Apparently the red dragon recalled everything before now, while his own memories were broken. One thing he did remember, however, was the sound of his original name, or in this case, the name of the unknown entity that was him and Karisu.

"I see you remember who I am, but here I am known as Kadai. Although you and I have experienced similar results, we have vastly different means of arrival. But that is a story for another day."

Kadai spoke with his naturally deep and strong voice, but now it was far calmer, nowhere near as sharp as the dragontaur may have been accustomed to back in Morbidia.

After Chaos/Kadai had spoken to him, Thyrdowhan answered:

"I shall call thee by thy new name. Thou canst still call me Thyrdowhan. Kadai...I like how thy new name sounds,"

Again, Thyrdowhan noticed a change in the dark dragon. Kadai still had his strong voice, but the angry edge was gone. Though Thyrdowhan remembered the past and the place from whence he came, he wasn't going to dredge up the past to Kadai. Kadai would come to terms with who he was and learn about it in due time. Right now wasn't the time.

Kadai stood passively beside Thyrdowhan, enjoying the dry heat that the desert provided. From what it seemed, the dragontaur had no differences to him other than his change of locale. It didn't bother the dark dragon, rather made him curious.

"I wonder. What was the difference in our arrival in this plane that would warrant such a great change within me, but have no effect on you?"

Kadai's tail swayed from side to side slowly as he watched yet another caravan travel across the desert in the distance. He grew slightly hungry, and unfolded his massively oversized wings in preparation to take off for the hunt.

As they stood together, Thyrdowhan let the shimmering shield fade away, but his scales remained a darker red. He listened to Kadai's question.

"I don't know Kadai. I can only guess why I remain unchanged whilst thou hast changed in going between our world and this place. I don't know how thou hast arrived here, but for me it was like finding an exit to an endless cave-only instead of being in the Valley of Shadows-I'm in this trackless desert," replied Thyrdowhan as he watched, along with Kadai, another caravan crossing the desert. He noticed that Kadai was unfurling his vast wings to fly away and by the look that crossed the dark dragon's face, Kadai was on the hunt. He felt his own hunger pangs, but would hunt other meat.

Thyrdowhan focused on watching the caravan, and what he noticed and overheard made him suspicious. It looked like a group of riders leading a group of people on foot, which brought on unpleasant memories of raids that he saw in Morbidia, where the powerful peoples would plunder their weaker neighbors. The afffairs of peoples rarely affected him, but there were exceptions, and this was one of them. A part of him wanted to rout the riders and rescue the prisoners, but he knew that a hasty action would endanger him and Kadai.

"Kadai, if thou must hunt, then go. I hunt for different meat, and we dragons are solitary hunters," said Thyrdowhan in a soft voice, for he knew that the caravan was unaware of their presence.
