Shay
Prologue-
Prologue-
She was nothing special. Her hair, although beautiful - long, straight, and purple -, wasn't unusual. Her eyes were muddy brown in color, and she had a normal looking body with a slight tan. She was simply normal. She could run the mile in under nine minutes, and other than that she was strong enough that the other gym tests weren't too much of a problem. Her grades were average, well, she was smart, so it was average for a smart girl, and she led a normal life. She was destined to live normally, meet a normal guy, marry that normal guy, have ordinary children, have an average job, and die a normal death. Or rather, she would have, if he didn't exist.
You see, he was almost the exact opposite of her. Although her hair was brightly colored and normal, his was dark black, as were his eyes. Blacker, if that were at all possible. His skin was translucently pale, and he kept to himself. She had a bubbly personality and she was more a half-full kind of person, while he was the darkest of the dark and strangely biased on the fact that the glass was indeed half-empty. They were as different as light and dark, as fire and water, but oddly enough in the end....they were two halves of a whole.
Chapter 1- Just how we are
Their story begins at South Ewing High School, home to the Bloodsuckers, in southern California. Our attention is focused on a large group of junior girls walking towards the school building as the morning bell rang. Among them were Nikia Avery, Onyx Haine, Alehandra Point, Kumi Asani, Tally Youngblood, and Shay Amane, of whom this story revolves around. All five of them were giggling and grinning at each other and talking animatedly. That's how they normally were. They were arguably the tightest group of friends in the whole high school, and they were really didn't care what other people thought of them, only what their friends thought.
Andrew Minaght, shouted from a couple paces ahead of them, "Hey! The bell rang, you girls had better hurry up!" Shay, the most open minded of all of them, heard him over all their giggling, and she turned her head in his direction.
Andrew
She smiled brilliantly over at him and yelled back, "Thanks Drew! You're a life saver! I promise we'll pay more attention tomorrow!" As she watched him, he turned to look at her over his shoulder, and it was obvious even from the distance between them that he had rolled his eyes at her.
"Yeah, whatever! When you finally hear that bell, pigs will fly! Don't worry though, I'll be here tomorrow to save your butt again!" he shouted, laughing this time. At that moment he disappeared into the building and was off to class. By that time, Tally had broken free from the conversation with the rest of the gang and she smiled over at her best friend.
Tally
"He really is a great guy...and we really should listen harder for that bell. Eventually he's going to get tired of saving our hides." she chuckled.
"Yeah. We should, and you're right, he's so nice. We'll do better." Shay replied.
"Yeah, right!!" they both exclaimed at the same time, causing them to burst into a fit of giggles. At that moment the rest of the gang broke out of their daze and looked at the two with amusement.
"What's so funny?" Alehandra asked, with her slight spanish accent.
Alehandra
"Oh, nothing." Shay said after looking at Tally for a moment. "Right, Tally-wa?"
"Oh, yes, Shay-la is right. It was nothing." Tally grinned.
Nikia rolled her eyes. "You two and you're funny nicknames.. What was Andrew going on about before? I thought I'd heard him..?" she finished, looking from Shay to Tally and then back again. Shay and Tally's eyes widened and they looked at each other in horror.
Nikia
"Oh no!" they began together. "The bell! The warning bell! That's what he'd been going on about!" Tally moaned.
"We have to go, come on guys!" Kumi yelled, suddenly understanding where this conversation was going. At South Ewing High if you didn't get to class in time, not only were you locked out of class, but you were also sent the principals office for not just one, but five days of detention, and that was not how they wanted to spend their afternoons! Especially not with Mrs. Garcia, their Spanish teacher. If you were late to her class you had to clean up the Cafeteria, the bathrooms, and the lockerooms for three hours while speaking nothing but Spanish.. or nothing at all! Plus, she would give them extra homework! They'd be stuck at home doing nothing (homework) for hours!
Kumi
"What are we waiting for?!" screamed Onyx. "Run!" By the time she had said it of course, all six of the girls were in motion, running for dear life - well, close enough - towards their Spanish 4 class. They sprinted like maniacs through the hallways, shoving people out of their way, not even caring who it was they had shoved. Running blindly, Onyx shoved some random person and just kept on moving until she heard someone say her name, and she stopped instantly, flushing brightly.
Onyx
"Onyx! What was that for!?" yelled a kind of, at the moment, agitated young male student named Zane Amanski, who Onyx just happened to have a huge crush on. Turning around she waved sheepishly, her face still pink.
Zane
"Sorry, Zane! I'm late for class, Garsia-" she broke off as Kumi suddenly was at her side, grabbing her forearm and yanking her around and away.
"Sorry Zane! We're running late for Mrs. Garsia's Spanish class, she'll make it up to you later. Promise!" she shouted back at him, over her shoulder as she and Onyx made a run for it, following behind the other girls. As they ran, Kumi was laughing like a maniac.
"Ah-uh-how? Why?!" Onyx sputtered. "That...was evil." she muttered darkly.
"Oh, come on. It's not like it's a secret. I was just helping you along, and if it doesn't work out then he's not the guy for you, but if it does.." she trailed off suggestivly.
"Oh, shut it, you. Just run!" Onyx growled. By now they had caught you to the other four girls.
"These halls just seem to go on for forever!"
"Yeah they do, but I see her class, it's up ahead! Push it ladies!"
Shay was the farthest ahead and she saw that Mrs. Garcia was slowly starting to close the door.
"She's closing the door! We won't make it! Take me now!" she cried, theatrically. But, just as Mrs. Garcia was about to close the door completely, Shay ran at the door, and knocked it open, pushing Mrs. Garcia against the wall.
The rest of the girls followed in, in a tight squeeshed line just as the bell starting ringing, yelling, "Buenas dias, Señora Garcia!" over their shoulders.
Nikia was the last in and she bowed politely, blushing, and said, "Lo siento. Escusamos, Señora Garsia." before she hurried off to her desk and sat down just as the tardy bell finished ringing.
A very irrate Señora Garsia taught them Spanish that day, and as expected she gave the class a boat load of homework, 'Thanks to Shay and her gang,' and of course, the class groaned all at once. As the class was being dismissed, a dreadfully long hour and a half later, death glares were shot in their direction along with a lot of dark muttering about how, 'They're gonna make it so we never get a second of a break!'
"I'm sorry, guys..Really, we all are." Shay said sheepishly, trying to get back into their good graces, although she didn't really care all too much. The rest of her group nodded and said things like:
"We were having a very important conversation about cloth to skin ratio." Alehandra.
"I was trying to apologize to Zane. I accidentally knocked him down in the hall as I was running here.." Onyx.
"They should make the bells more obvious." Kumi.
"Please forgive us." Nikia.
"We're sorry, alright, jeez! You can stop muttering! We can hear you, you know!?" That one was Tally. Giggling, Shay walked over to her best friend and patted her back.
"Calm down, Tally-wa. They'll forgive us eventually. They always do...and just let them mutter. Who are we to care? They can think whatever they want about us. We know who we are." Shay said tenderly to the sister-like figure beside her. Tally sighed and nodded grudgingly.
"Yeah. I suppose." she muttered, exhaling through her nose in an annoyed sort of way.
"That a girl." Shay chuckled again, patting her back once more. "All right..gang" she said in a mocking way, "Let's get to Chorus before we suddenly find ourselves in the same situation again."
"Verdad, I don't want to have to go through that again." Alehandra stated with a shiver. "Did you see all of those death glares..It was like the Day of the Dead." she said, bringing in some of her Spanish culture. Nikia smiled and nodded. With that statement, the girls made their way to their next class, once again talking about things that didn't really matter, like what was for lunch. That was just how they were.
Chapter 2 - I'll go, and I'll like it.
A few hours later, when school had finally ended, all six of the girls made their way to the commons area in front of the High School to laugh and hang. It was part of their routine. Everyday, right after school they would sit around in front of the school fountain and just talk about whatever came to their minds. A few minutes after they got to the fountain, Kumi brought up Zane to the rest of the gang.
"Okay, yal. In the hall this morning, on the way to Garsia's class, Onyx here accidently knocked him over. I told him that she would make it up to him later. Now, what are we going to do about this. Lover-girl here, seems just a little too shy to do it on her own. How are we going to make this happen?" Kumi asked, looking from one girl to another, completely ignoring Onyx who was sputtering on about how she was not shy and she didn't have a crush on Zane.
"Well...we obviously don't want it to be a double, they need bonding time, but how are we going to get them together-" Shay began but broke off as Zane suddenly appeared beside Onyx. Shay just sat there with her eyes wide and her mouth hanging over in surprise while the rest of the group, including Onyx just sat motionless staring at him with wide eyes.
"So. I was thinking about how you were gonna make it up to me, you know running me over in the hallway, and I think I came up with the perfect idea." Zane said with a huge, beautiful smile. "Tonight, at seven o' clock sharp, I am going to come over to your house, and you're gonna come to Yavani's with me, and you're going to let me buy you dinner." Zane finished his idea with a big, convincing grin. Then, before she could say anything he got up and said, "Okay, great. I'm glad you agree. I'll see you at seven." and he was off. Like he wasn't giving her a chance to back down, all in all it was...spectacular.
Onyx just stared after him like a fish out of water until, "Did you hear that?! He want's to take me out! To Yavani's!...Did I miss something..?" she said, in a complete daze. The rest of the group started laughing and patting her back, congratulating her.
"Dang, girl, Yavani's is a nice place. He must really like you!" Kumi exclaimed happily. "See. What did I tell ya? Am I a genius or what?" she asked, gloating, her face full of pride, aimed at her friend.
"I do say you nailed that one, Kumi-la." Shay said giggling. "Okay, so what are we waiting for. It's already three o' clock. You only have four hours to get ready for the date of the century. Let's go!" she finished, grabbing her stunned friend by the arm, and yanking her away from school and towards her house, with the rest of the giggly group following behind with joyous smiles of victory on their faces.
The moment they got to Onyx's large house they got started on her makeup and outfit. They couldn't make her look too needy, but they also couldn't dress her up like a peasant. So, they had this question to answer. What was in the middle between shy girl and hooker? ...The answer was simple...but the outfit was not. Normal was not easily put into clothes, expecially not on a first 'date' where a girl wanted to look expecially hot.
"What am I gonna do? It was probably just a pity date. He knows how I've been crushing on him, so he's going out with me because he fells sorry for me! Seriously, it's not possible for me to look hot!" Onyx cried sadly, already having come to terms with her fate. It was kind of true..Not that she wasn't hot, but Onyx dressed the most conservatively of them all. You know, t-shirts and pants mostly.
"Well. Look what you normally wear. If he asked you out, seeing you wear this everyday, then that means that he likes you for you, and you don't have to slu.t yourself up for him. He'd be fine in whatever you wear. You know, I've read somewhere that you wearing a guys boxers and t-shirt turns a guy on more than revealing outfits. But, a little skin wouldn't hurt him." Alehandra said. She was probably the most well read of them all, after Shay and Tally.
"Alehandra, we know that you are very well up to date on boys and all that, but we are not putting Onyx in boxers and a tee for her first date. We are looking for a sexy but not sexy outfit! Now, stop talking, and start helping us search!" Tally stated with finality.
Alei glared at Tally but shut her trap. She let her eyes search the outfits that had been strewn out on Onyx's bed and suddenly her eyes lit up. Her eyes had created a tunnel vision towards one single outfit. It was a simple black dress with a bow that tied around the neck to hold it up. The only other mential feature about the apparel was that near the bottom of the dress was a semi-thick white line that went all the way around the flowing bottom of the dress.
Not her in dress. Just dress.
Pointing at it she said in a reverant tone, "There. That one. The black dress. It's perfect. Add black heels and you've got the most..perfect choice."
All eyes turned to where she was pointing and gasps of appriciation met her ears.
"Alei's right. It's...perfecto." Kumi whispered in awe as she looked at the single outfit. Quickly they looked to Onyx, who had her eyes glued onto the piece of clothing.
"I don't even remember owning that. But..you guys are right. It's the best outfit ever." she murmured, her eyes showing hope again, that maybe this date wouldn't be a completely failure. Armed with the right gear, outfit, she could do anything.
Before Onyx could change her mind, Shay ran to the dress, while Tally ran to Onyx and stripped her off her clothing. Working as a tag team, the two dressed her in ten seconds flat, shoes and all. It looked like Onyx was going to turn to look at herself in the mirror, but Nikia stopped her.
"Ah, ah, ah. Not until we've done you're hair and make-up." she proclaimed with a cruel smile. When they were finally done with all of her beautification, she looked stunning. She didn't look all that different, but what they had done to her had definitally made her eyes stand out a little more, which on her, was a good thing. All they had done to her face was put on a little mascara and eyeliner and then for her hair, they straightened it and fluffed up her bangs a little. All in all, not much, but it still looked stunning.
"Now you may look." Nikia ammended with a proud smile. It was obvious that she thought very highly of her friend right now. Turning in her chair, Onyx looked into the mirror, and her jaw dropped.
"Is that me?...I-I look hot." she said in disbelief. She really had a rather low self-estime when it came to her looks. She thought she looked good, but she had never been asked out before, and she was already sixteen. All of her other friends, had at least been asked out once. She just thought she was undesireble, like she was missing something, but it hadn't bothered her that much, well, until she had met Zane that was. Then she started caring that no one seemed to be interested in her.
"You always look hot, Onyx-la." Shay said tenderly. "You just didn't realize it. You're probably one of the best looking of all of us. You just don't realize your own potential." she finished softly.
"Well...thank you..Shay. So..do you guys really think I have a chance with someone as god-like as Zane. He is one of the best looking guys in all of South Ewing High." she said a skeptically.
"Onyx, hun. He asked you out. If you didn't have a chance, then why would he be the one taking the incinative?" Alehandra said gently.
"Seriously, you'll be fine. Just have fun, and be yourself. We all love you, if he sees how you really are, he'll love you too. And if you just be yourself, I don't see why that won't happen." Tally said with a soft, convincing smile.
"Okay...I'll go. And I'll like it."
Chapter 3 - We mustn't keep Yavani's waiting
Later that night, at seven on the dot, a car pulled up in front of the house. Onyx and the rest of the girls looked up at each other intensly, and when they heard the car door slam, they moved into action. Quickly they retouched up Onyx's make-up, hair, and outfit, and then they shoved her down the stairs. Giggling they ran and hid back in her room, right after giving her ten thumbs-up all in a line, two per person.
The second they got into the room, and shut the door, the door bell went off, signaling the fact that Zane had in fact arrived for Onyx and was really planning to take her out on a date. The five girls grinned at each other and pressed their ears to the door, one girl on top of the other.
Like that only with ears pressed to the door.
Onyx, nervously smoothed down her dress, and stepped to the door, putting a smile on her face. Twisting the door open her smile genuinely brightened when she saw Zane standing there, looking all handsome in his khakis and clean white shirt. She didn't feel over or under dressed at all. The looked...well like an amazing couple in what they were wearing. Zane's smile brightened and his eyes widened when he saw how magnificant Onyx looked. She always looked great, but now he could really see her eyes.
"Hey, Onyx. You look fantastic. 'Ya ready to go?" he asked casually.
Nodding shyly, Onyx responded, "T-thank you. You look very handsome," she blushed. "Yeah, I'm ready." she finished, still slightly pink. Zane's smile became gentle when he saw her blush. She was such a sweet girl.
"Alright then, let's go. I've got us reservations for 7:15, and Yavani's doesn't wait!" he chuckled with a brilliant smile. Onyx blushed again and ducked her head but she nodded.
"Y-Yeah, we mustn't keep Yavani's waiting." she stuttered out, nervously. Already she was getting embarrassed and jittery around him. This was the reason why she hadn't been brave enough to ask him out herself. She could hardly talk to him without flaming bright red and stuttering like an idiot.
He smiled and took her arm, leading her out to his car.
