I haven't found a title yet...any suggestions? Feedback be nice too! ^_^
Prologue
Tick Tock. Tick Tock. The clocks quiet whisper seemed to echo through out the room that was already full of my history teachers’ lecture. 10, 9, 8, I counted the seconds, 7, 6, 5 come on, 4, 3, 2…RING!!! The bell that normally signaled the beginning of another class now gave me freedom – and I let it show. Grabbing my backpack I hurried out the room with the rest of my classmates into the crowded hall. Goodbyes and shouts drowned out the after noon announcements as we ran out the door – summer, the greatest time of year; when the trees were alive with the rustle of lush, green leaves and the flowers waved their beautiful petals. The lands of Warrenton, Virginia were beautiful this year, more so than any other it seemed. The branches of the many dogwoods were in full bloom, not a bud left on their course branches. And the flowers were just dazzling, sparkling in the sunlight. The sky was a bright, water paint blue, a puffy, cotton ball of a cloud coming along every now and then – it was truly a beautiful picture.
“Wait up!” I turned to see my friend Roxanne rushing towards me, pushing people out of the way with a small grunt, “Can you believe it! We’re finally done with Middle School! High School here I come!” she said with a bright smile on her face. Roxy was my best friend; I met her in 6th grade when I had moved back from Florida. Things had been a little bumpy at first, but when things finally smoothed out we became the best of friends. Roxy was a tall, fit girl, with wavy brown hair layered to look like a rock stars. Her eyes are brown and aren’t too far apart or too close – but she does have some long eyelashes.
Making our way down the round hill towards the buses I started to notice things: It was too quiet. Just as the thought ran through my mind I heard a short “Ah!” as Roxy when tumbling down the hill. I thingyed my head and stared quizzically before noting the glimpse of metallic red hair I had gotten – Michelle, AKA: Shelly. Shelly is quite short, the shortest in our little trio. She is quite pale with light brown eyes and a freckled face. Her hair is medium length and a cool, metallic red color. She’s quite bubbly but submissive in such a way that I can’t explain.
Though I tried to trot down the hill carefully, I ended up tumbling down anyway. It wasn’t long before I collided with Michelle and Roxy and we rolled the rest of the way. I don’t know how, and I don’t know why, but somehow I ended up on the bottom of the pile – but was laughing all the same.
“I can’t…breathe!” I choked out, struggling beneath their combined weight.
“Sorry!” They said simultaneously, rolling off and into the cool, refreshing grass. The familiar sound of engines revving snapped us out of our silent daydreams as we heard the buses slowly pulling away. Yelling in protest we jumped to our feet and scurried to our bus where our driver waited patiently – she had gotten used to us being late.
Laughing, we ran down the aisle towards the back where we dropped down into our seats and opened the windows. Yelling and waving goodbye to all those acquaintances out there we eventually settled down with bright smiles on our faces; giggling. We sat in the back of the bus where we took up one seat each, forcing three girls up front to squeeze together. Shoving my heavy book bag between the seats I stretched out across the seat and rested my head on the warm window, letting the sun warm my face. I drowned out my friends chattering as I relaxed for a moment, my curly brown hair actually resting against my shoulders for once.
Roxy’s and Michelle’s screams are what awakened me as I jolted into a sitting position and looked towards the emergency exit. The sound of crunching metal rang in my ears as I curled into a tight ball, my hands covering my neck as I shut my eyes tight. The bus was full of the terrified screams of my bus mates; so many that only I seemed to be the only one not doing so. Something hard hit my head and everything went hazy before it all just went black.

Chapter One
The ride to the hospital was all a blur: Flashing lights, the bump of being loaded into the ambulance, more bright lights. The rushed words of the people around me were drowned out by my own heart as it thumped weekly in my ears. What had happened? I moaned at the pain in my stomach, my arms moving to clutch at the open wound only to be restrained by strong hands, “Stay still, this will only take a moment.” I nodded weakly before falling into the comforting blackness once more.

When I awakened I was no longer within the electric atmosphere of the hospital but in a new place; a place I had never been before. The bed I laid on wasn’t soft and comforting but hard and uncomfortable in every aspect – it felt like a brick. After my blurry vision sharpened I realized that my small bed was nestled in a corner and there were no windows. Straining, I lifted my head from its place (realizing there was no pillow in the process) and found that my two best friends were in the same room –Roxy banging her head against the wall and Michelle passed out. But there was something…different.
Roxy’s brown hair was streamed with white highlights, becoming bolder at the tips where they dominated the brown. She had two wolf ears of golden color with white rims – currently facing back. Her tail was bushy on the bottom where it was white, but sleek on the top where it was the same gold as her ears. She had two wings attached at her back where they had torn two holes in her shirt. They were as big as she was! The smaller feathers were white and the longer ones gold. Her eyes were a forest green, lighter at the outer layer and fading into black the closer to the pupil it got.
Michelle’s metallic red hair was flaming more than ever, more colors of red in it than before – and it was layered. The hair was still long, but I couldn’t think of another reason as to why there were so many different hues of red showing. Her two, dove wings were white and bigger than she, with a golden-red rim. Her tail resembled Roxy in a way, but was sleeker – a foxes. It was layered with many different yellowish-reds, each color fading into white at the tip. Her ears were a deep maroon color with black tips.
My eyes drifted for a moment, “Roxy?” I called weakly. I watched as her eyes went wide and she scrambled over to me, hovering over me like a watch dog.
“Ray! Are you alright?” Roxy asked, panicked.
I smiled slightly to reassure her, “Yes, I think so. What happened?” I asked, hoping to get a straight answer as to all this madness. I tried not to look so confused and in disbelief, but Roxy saw through that in less than a second.
“I’m not sure. I woke up only a few minutes ago – and then all the whiteness made me go mad!” I laughed at her “madness” but it couldn’t chase away the uneasiness that had made its home in my stomach. What had happened to them? Why hadn’t I been affected? Or had I been affected and just didn’t know it?
The unfamiliar twitching up-top my head scared me and I couldn’t resist reaching up to touch it – ears. Pointed, moving, twitching, cat ears. My jaw dropped and I jumped from the bed with new found strength; twirling around in circles trying to look at myself as Roxy sat on the bed with a “You’re such an idiot” look.
The first thing I noticed after my ears were my teeth, my new canines – or felines. They were sharp and almost cut my tongue as I brushed it across them and I would have winced if I wasn’t so alarmed. My tanned skin had lightened slightly and my dark brown, curly hair turned darker. There were streaks of both black and silver, more so on the under layer where you could barely see them. I had a long cat tail that twitched on its own accord, it was black. My wings were only slightly longer than Roxy’s, the pitch black color fading into gray as you neared the rim. The only difference was that mine were dragon wings. My ears were also black, with silver tips. And, after questioning Roxy, I figured out that my eyes had changed as well. No longer brown, they were layered with two different colors. They had black and metallic silver circles, creating a pattern in my irises. There was a thin layer of gold surrounding my pupil, but you had to look hard to notice it.
The small groan behind me made me whirl around and run over to Michelle’s bedside where I stared down into her bright red eyes and asked her if she was ok. Once she had her frantic fit we eventually settled down in a circle on the floor, taking care not to step or squish anyone’s tail.
Just as we had one good explanation for all this (we were dreaming seemed to be the only reasonable one, the other one being we were kidnapped by aliens - contributed by Michelle if you were wondering) a new voice entered the room, “Well it seems that our test trio is finally awake”.

Chapter Two
There was a small whoosh as we all snapped our heads around to look at the point of origin where the voice had erupted. Before us was a young man, about 16, give or take. He had crystal blue eyes that seemed to twinkle with mischief but still look somewhat kind. His hair was a dark brown, almost black, but not quite. He was tall, taller than me at least; which was definitely saying something.
“What the….” Roxy trailed, her eyes widening at the sight of the new guy. The blood in her cheeks moved to the surface, giving her face the color of a red rose. Roxy’s only weakness had entered the room: a boy; and not just any boy, oh no, a cute boy.
“Who are you?” I demanded, nudging Roxy in her side to stop her embarrassing staring. I kept my stony gaze on the boy as Roxy shook her head and tried to look at anything but that guy – that would call for a slap in the head later.
“The name’s Chance.” He said simply, nodding his head in acknowledgement. That’s what it seemed anyway, he very well could have had a head problem, and how would I know? I met this guy what? Two minutes ago? Or were they seconds?
“My name’s Rayanna, Ray for short. This is Michelle, the small, bouncy one, and that’s Roxy, the one who currently looks more like a tomato than Michelle.” I said simply, only to get hit on the head. “Ow!” I exclaimed, rubbing my head where Roxy had hit it hard.
“Is anyone else hungry?” Michelle asked, quite randomly actually. Roxy and I, mouths opened, eyes squinted, made a hand motion and looked towards her with that, “What the hell?” look on our faces.
“Well then, follow me.” Chance said with a short laugh, leaving the room and disappearing out the door. With a look and a shrug or two, we jumped to our feet and hurried after him. Though this was all quite weird, nothing prepared us for what we saw next.
Walking out the door, we were instantly met with the stale smell of mold and mildew – like nobody had cleaned in months. And even though my room at home didn’t smell the best, you just couldn’t compare the two. The stairs we walked down creaked beneath our weight, seeming to shift. The walls were covered in paint chips, revealing the gray beneath. At the sight of just this I wanted to turn around and run back into the safety of my white room. Wait, MY room? That wasn’t MY room!
The room below wasn’t much better. There was little paint on the walls and cages were everywhere. The creatures inside those cages were quite interesting, odd to say the very least – but I can’t really talk. These creatures seemed to be human, but with a variety of animal qualities. Some had the wings of a dragon or bird with a human body, others had tails and ears. The most intriguing of them all was what looked like a bee, bunny, and human cross. With a human body and face, it had long, gray ears that laid flat against his face. His wings were nothing but a slim layer of membrane that shouldn’t have been able to lift him. He had a long stinger with a bushy rabbit tail that looked as if it had been shoved on the end. He was, oddly, cute. With those big, baby blue eyes and blonde hair.
“Look Sarah! They’ve brought another one of us!” He exclaimed, turning towards the female behind him. This Sarah looked nothing like him. She looked to be a cross between a human and butterfly, she was quite pretty but had an aura of despair around her. She was for the most part human; there was only one thing that set her apart from the species. She had two, dark navy wings that fluttered upon her back. She looked so very fragile, but I’ve found that those of that variety tend to be stronger than they seem.
“No Johnny, they aren’t like us, can you not smell it? The human in there scent?” Sarah asked, wrinkling her nose.
“Oh.” Johnny said, plopping onto the floor in disappointment. Hugging his knees to his chest, he sighed and rested his chin on his knees, staring at the ground. I stopped and watched silently as Sarah moved over and hugged him close. Her piercing glare made me jump and I didn’t hesitate rushing over to the safety of Roxy’s side.
“This is insane!” Roxy whispered, looking around her in shock. I was surprised that she had been the one to say so; Michelle almost always beat her to it. Actually, Michelle hadn’t uttered a word since we had left that room upstairs. Wow, even thinking that is scary. She walked along quietly, silently, looking around her without a hint of emotion on her face.
The short hallway seemed miles long as I kept close to Roxy – my comfort. My shoulder never strayed from hers the entire time, and if it would have I probably would have fainted.
I sighed in relief as we exited that evil feeling hall and into a large room. There was a pretty, wooden dinning table in the middle of the room big enough for 8 people but there were only 5 chairs there currently. The walls were painted a forest-y green with a white wall guard. There were plates of a variety of food; everything from beets (EW!) to chicken. At the sight of the food, I’m embarrassed to say my stomach grumbled in longing. I blushed faintly and tried to silence myself by casually wrapping my arms around my middle.
“Take a seat; father will be out in a moment to explain.” Chance said, motioning for us to take a seat, obviously not realizing just how hungry we were. Chance walked into the hallway without another word, leaving us in this strange place all by ourselves – what a gentlemen.
We complied, sinking into the seat, careful to place our tails to the side after Michelle’s small yelp. Roxy sat in the middle, I on her left and Michelle on her right – just as we sat at the lunch table, it was tradition.
I slapped at Roxy’s hand as she reached out to grab a piece of chicken, “Don’t eat that! That could poison!” I exclaimed, causing Roxy to go pale and whip her hand back into her lap.
“Well I can assure you death isn’t exactly what we had planned for you.” My eyes snapped towards the door as a lean man walked through them – I had to assume that he was Chance’s father. My eyes took him in quickly and silently, trying to find a resemblance – there was none. This man was lean and had very little muscle; I could take him I’m sure. His hair was long and wispy, white with streaks of gray and combed back to cover what seemed to be a balding scalp. But, oddly, I saw him as quite powerful, a leader.
“I’m sorry to say that our trust in you is minimal.” I hissed, glaring in distaste. I wasn’t at all happy with this situation, as you can imagine. Just today (I think, anyway,) I had been in a bus crash, taken to the hospital, kidnapped from the hospital, and turned into a…thing!
“And why is that?” He purred; walking towards the other side of the table, a seat of his own. Folding his hands, he rested his chin and watched me, waiting for a response – and he wasn’t disappointed.
“Is that a rhetorical question?” I asked, though it was obviously a rhetorical question in its own.
His gaze darkened suddenly, “Be careful, your attitude will not carry you far here.” He warned, which only provoked me.
“Then be a little more careful with yours and we’ll never have this discussion again.” I said, blinking calmly. Yeah, being calm in such a situation came easily to me, I’m not quite sure why, but I win 99% of fights this way.
Before I could even blink, I was sent flying across that room as a hand made a piercing contact with my face – the son of a pregnant dog had slapped me!
My head hit hard against the wall (denting it, actually,) and every breath flew out of me. My cheek was beating red and stung badly as I reached up to touch it with my hand. My eyes had started to water and I flinched as Roxy and Michelle got up to run to my side – it wasn’t supposed to be that easy. I mean, the fact that tears were threatening to fall from my eyes was enough to make Roxy gasp. I had never been slapped by a guy before and hadn’t known what to expect – all of my fights have been with girls. I guess I had pushed it too far this time huh?
“Are you alright?” Michelle asked as they both kneeled at my side. In any other circumstance I would have said something sassy back like “What do you mean ‘Am I alright?’ I just got slapped!” but this wasn’t any other circumstance and I found myself just staring back at the man that had the nerve to lay a hand on me. But before I had the chance to get upset, Roxy was all on him.
She spun around in a moment of pure rage, her green orbs flashing; a low, menacing growl vibrating through the air as she moved to lunge at him. Her wings unfurled and her lips pulled back into a sneer, her body lowering to the ground as she propelled herself forward. She seemed to move lightning fast as she raced towards him – but the guards were faster. In only a second they had thrust their rods forward and protected our new-found enemy. Before I knew it both Michelle and Roxy were being heaved out of the room with flailing arms and legs.
It wasn’t long before I had two guards pulling me from the room and dragging me up the stairs to yet another room. This one was exactly like the other one, the only difference being the number of beds – one. I was thrust into the room and left there in my own frustration and uncertainty. Sighing, I plopped myself on the bed and, after a lot of twisting and turning, I eventually fell asleep.
